Tips to avoid DQ

Swimmers can be disqualified (DQ) for illegal stroke technique.

Freestyle:

  • The swimmer must end with a one-handed touch.
  • The swimmer may not push or pull on the lane lines.
  • The swimmer may not touch or push off the bottom of the pool.
  • The swimmer may flip on their back if they become too tired. This is perfectly legal.

Backstroke:

  • The swimmer must always finish on their back.
  • A swimmer cannot pull or push off of the lane lines.
  • For older swimmers: if you are doing a flip turn, you only get one stroke on your stomach. You must also keep your arm moving. If it stops or passes your hip before you turn you may be disqualified.

Breaststroke:

  • The swimmer must always touch the wall with two hands. This includes the turn and finish.
  • The swimmer is only allowed one pull and one kick underwater when pushing off the wall.
  • The swimmer's hands may never pass their waist, except for the underwater pullout.
  • No scissor kicks.

Butterfly:

  • The swimmer must always touch the wall with two hands. This includes the turn and the finish.
  • The swimmer's feet must always stay together while kicking. No scissor kicks.
  • Swimmer’s arms must break the surface of the water.
